Having been to Macau since I was a kid, I noticed there is a local obsession with constructing cages outside of their windows. In 2018, I decided to explore this a little more. What I find is a visually stimulating maze of colourful structures.

What probably started as a means to keep the house safe from burgling evolved into a way of maximising square-footage. These cages are added onto the houses for extra storage space, to hang-dry their laundry, to keep their pets and occasionally as a shortcut to walk from one room to aonther quicker.

But no one forgets their personal touch. The cold steel bars are often painted to the liking of the owner. For those that are left plain, the person’s love of certain hues is still palpable when you look closely. The result is a crammed yet colourful image, subtly displaying their individuality on the grey canvas that is these concrete constructs.
